Tom Napier, a research architect at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Construction Engineering Research Laboratory and member of the Building Materials Reuse Association, has been a leading waste expert in the field of construction waste management for years. On 4/21/08, Chicago's Green Technology Center hosted Mr. Napier's presentation, "Recycling Building Materials: A Hidden Resource", at the Chicago Architecture Foundation. He discussed the types and magnitudes of environmental effects associated with landfill debris, along with deconstruction, salvage, and recycling approaches for buildings materials’ reuse. He also discussed case studies demonstrating the viability of salvage and recycling within real-world project constraints.
