Green Modern Kits Offer Smart, Affordable Prefab Housing
Posted by: Jamie 7/24/2008 2:41 PM

Green Modern Kit’s motto is “Green Building for the Rest of Us”. This unique housing kit includes a passive solar design blueprint and an energy efficient “bare bones” building envelope that, once ordered, will be delivered from a local manufacturer. The kits utilize energy-efficient SIPs and because you are purchasing the bare bones of the home, the green house kit is affordable! By only purchasing the building envelope, the kit allows for your personal customization and budget. The Green Modern Kits website offers guidance on how to finish your home using green products and created a list of windows, cladding & doors to order directly through the vendor to make it easy on purchasers and their contractor. You can also easily call Copeland Kassati, founder of Green Modern Kits, to find out more about her affordable green prefab homes. I recently had a chance to speak with Copeland and, with her southern charm and enthusiasm, she outlined all the different aspects about the prefab kits.  While selling green building homes was her passion, she also expressed her immense value for preservation, both of old buildings and land. Here are some details about Green Modern Kits:

Each house kit is fabricated by the manufacturing plant closest to you geographically. Green Modern Kits has agreements in place with regional manufacturers across the country, so that your panels won’t have to travel long distances. The panels R-Value can be specified, ranging from the 4 5/8 –R-Value 15 to a 12 7/16—R-Value 47.

Copeland has partnered with energy efficiency-minded architects to work on affordable passive housing designs. The casa ti design is a one-story, 1,200 square foot home by David Day, which is available from the starting price of $22,537! That's a small down payment for the average American home!Casa Ti

Green Modern Kit’s larger option, the R1 Residential, was designed by Grace Street. It is a 2,000-square-foot, two-story design that offers an optional garage.

To satisfy traditional enthusiasts, Copeland has begun offering Green Cottage Kits. Theses traditional homes also utilize SIPs and are designed to look like 200 year old cottages that will last for 200 years!

Copeland is using the casa ti design for her own off-grid home, scheduled to be constructed in the second half of 2008. She writes a blog, that is chock-ful of ruminations about her project, including how she will cool her zero energy home and creative ways she'll finish off her house kit, as can be read in her blog post "How to Make SIPs Stew".  Her positive attitude along with the many photos that she posts in her blog makes it a must read. Plus you'll learn a thing or two about solar cooking!
