I have a DX system installed in my current house.
I am really happy with it.

While bidding out a new house project, I have been given a bid that is a little less than double what the original was, without a significant increase in square footage.

Central Virginia. 20k for the system I am happy with, 37k for a similar system in the new house.

37k is not doable, and I think, absurd.

If any geothermal contracters actually read this and are interested, I would be more than happy to discuss it.

As of now, DX geo is double the cost of competition, and almost double what it would cost an existing customer.

Very disappointing.

I own, and I tried.

How long ago was your current system installed? What was included in your quote? What type of duct system was proposed? Were there any additional options included [ERV's, air cleaners, deluxe air handler, zone components, etc.]?

If your current system was installed more than 2-years ago, there have been a number of changes that have increased the install cost of all systems [standard air source and geothermal systems] alike.

First of all, Energy codes have changed requiring contractors to install higher R-value insulation on duct systems. The result is a 30-35% increase in costs. 13 SEER systems are now the lowest efficiency systems you can purchase whereas you could purchase 10 SEER systems 2-years ago. Higher efficiency means larger coils to transfer energy, more copper and aluminum  required to manufacturer these coils means higher manufacturing and install costs.

Metal prices [sheet metal used in duct manufacturing] has doubled in the last 2 years. Copper tubing used in air conditioning and refrigeration has more than tripled! Copper fittings used in piping...tripled. Brazing alloy...more than doubled.

Petroleum prices have nearly doubled. Anything that contains plastic for example has increased in price. Flexible duct contains a plastic liner which has increased in price. PVC used in drain lines has gone up. Plastic straps used in connecting flexible duct has increased in price. Nylon webbing used to hang duct has gone up. Virtually EVERY component used in installing any HVAC system has nearly doubled [or more] in cost!

Let's not forget fuel costs have nearly doubled also.

Refrigerant used in HVAC/R systems have tripled since January '06.

The HVAC industry is no different than other industries that have felt the crunch of increased operating costs. Considering the information listed above, I can see why the new system proposed could be nearly doubled in cost! Therefore, your proposal does not sound unreasonable. If the system cost is to much for your budget, you should ask your contractor if there are any alternatives to reduce the costs.
