David,

Post some pics as you progress.

What a fantastic idea!

Here's the well drilling rig from December:

Teardown pictures from today.

Branches with no trunks:

The length of the basement, again, no trunks anymore.

And, oops, no more furnace either.  The old propane 50 gal tank is still operating, with the new 40 gallon buffer tank waiting to be hooked in.

On the floor is a whole-house dehumidifier I bought a few years ago.  They are going to patch the drain into the condensate pump of the air handler, allowing me to get it off that wooden shelf you see and put it on the floor.

They're also going to put a run of ductwork so that the humidifier can dump the dry air halfway down the length of the basement.  That should help cycle the air throughout the basement more effectively.

New 80 gallon electric tank, waiting for a spot to sit in:

Now that everything is open, you can see return grates and ducts to the 2nd floor:

Hauled ass over the weekend front-loading a lot of my electrician's work.  He was only able to come on Tuesday, and the PSNH guys were due for the HeatSmart inspection and meter install at 1:00, with the town inspector at 3:00.  So my weekend and Monday were spent moving the sub-panel, tacking wires, etc.

I gotta say, SER wire is a real pain in the ass to work with.  The one nice trick I learned from my electrician is to use PVC conduit clamps to hang the big wire.  The clamps screw in rather than nail, and I find it a lot easier especially when the space it tight and you are trying to figure out how to make two hands do the work of four.  All while the SER wire is desperately trying to do whatever the hell it wants to.

The final subpanel wiring:

I left him lots of conduit work in the final termination of the branch circuits:

HeatSmart Meter (top) installed with DCU unit alongside:

Reinsulating under the 1st floor, there was only loosely-hung R-11, I've packed 9" R-30 into the areas where the ducting will go, and will finish up the rest at my leisure after the Geo project is finished:

First day of ductwork.  I'm getting three zones (basement, 1st floor, 2nd floor) whereas I only had one before.  Left to right is 2nd floor, 1st floor, basement, return:

The return ductwork is more involved now.  The Air Handler is offset to the right of where it used to be.  The first bend goes to the first cluster of returns at the north side of the house.  You can see it branch down immediately, which then shoots over to the main trunk runs (see previous photo) where it will catch the basement returns and the return cluster in the middle of the house:

Sheet metal guy has been steadily adding to the basement, the three zones are almost done.  South end of the house where the three supplies start to dwindle and terminate (note that they jog left to save room):

Gettin' mighty dark in here.  I have to re-hang some of the flourescent lighting.  View down the house to the north, lotsa stuff hanging from the floor joists now:

Final look south from the north end of the house:

Done!

Had a glitch with the zone control unit late Thursday, so it was a bit of a disappointment as I thought we'd be on the air by the time the tech left.  But the contractor sent out a guy from Bryant first thing Friday morning, and by noontime everything was all set.

So far so good.  I'm loving the three zones, and the Evolution control panels are very nice to work with.  I especially like the ability to name the zones, and to see/change the settings for any zone right from the master controller.

The damper control unit:

The air handler/heat pump with final wiring:

Stick a bow on it, it's done:
