Seen my first Geothermal Advertisement in National Geographic Magazine, it was for ClimateMaster.  Wasn't too descriptive of an advertisement, and no girls in Bikini's hanging off the system, implying get a Geothermal system and get the sexy girl.  One of the complaints I have with the Geothermal industry is they really don't market there product well.  I hear Oil heat commericals on the radio all the time, pushing there 90% efficent heating systems and how much better they are than Natural gas.  I'm thinking the whole time listening to the commerical how a Good Geothermal advertisement could really have postive impact when they compare 90% gas or oil to 300% to 500% geothermal systems.  Geothermal may be start of the art, but in the marketing department they are livng in the Dark Ages.

Selling geothermal with a sound byte or 1 picture is a Herculean task when you figure most folks have never heard of it. Most of the dealers I know are still word of mouth and small guys with no significant advertising budget.
The system that historically works best for me is pay per lead on line stuff. Thats introduces me to folks that are savvy enough with computers to educate fairly quickly.
The worst thing for me is a bunch of unvetted shoppers. I've driven 45 miles to hear "if it costs more than $5,000 I can't buy."

Tech Gromit - Are you referring to the Climate Master Ad that displays a home with 80% of its space being clipped out while declaring "savings of up to 80%? I'm assuming so...I ran across the same Ad only on the 3rd or 4th page of Newsweek. I actually thought the Ad was quite catchy and creative, and I was excited to finally see one of the big mfgs to run a national campaign. Our company actually participated in a trade show up here in Portland, OR the other weekend in which we blew up a sign with that Ad (with permission from Climate Master, of course) and we felt it caught many folks' eye!

Joe - I also feel you there. It's tough to be in a market positioned for massive growth, but which will require big time capactiy upgrades at the flip of a switch in order to keep up with that growth in demand. It's hard to justify a pricey, multi-media outlet advertising campaign that is truly effective w/out quickly ramping up the equipment and workforce capacity to keep up with demand. At this point in the market's infancy it is much easier to rely on word of mouth and selling to educated and often times wealthy homeowners/homebuyers, scheduling 1-2 jobs at a time max.

Yes that was it, you can catch all the eyes you want, did your Ad blowup lead to people asking you questions about your product?

As for "market's infancy", Geothermal has been around commerically since the 70's, hell the house I'm living in was built in 1991 with geothermal installed, when the hell is the industry going to grow up?! Progress is increasing much too slow in my opinion, if the manufactures are not going to run a good marketing campain, perhaps the government should get involved with marketing it.

I think a 30% tax credit is pretty heavy government involvement...

Geo has been in MI since about 1949. Big difference is propane and fuel oil prices have made it interesting to more than just engineers (no offense Curt). This is incidentally also why the big thrust in closed loop. Gadget guys don't mind doing their own coax flush from time to time.

None taken.

We gadget guys like to endlessly fiddle with systems, so maintenance is no big deal.

It is a huge adjustment sometimes for engineers to design systems for the rest of the world that just wants to set the thermostat and forget about everything else in the system.
