I beleive that my Geocomfort 410A system uses to much electricity for heating. If the outside temperartur is below freezing the systems uses approx. 30-40KWh/day. It is a ground loop system. Thanks Klaus |

I'm a homeowner. Do you know if your electric auxiliary heat is unnecessarily coming on by possibly recovering in the morning from a nigh time temperature setback? If so, you can read some recent threads by doing a search for "aux heat lockout" without the quotes. |

Klaus, We have the same Compressor brand (GeoComfort). I am also a homeowner so I can only relate with what I have on my bill from one year we have our system. We have 3 ton-2 story, 1800 SF, close loop-vertical, 2 zone and 2 thermostat, 1 stage. We live in New Jersey. As of November of this year, our electric usage average about 14KW a day with the same average temp of 52 degrees. Last December 2008, our usage averaged about 48KW a day with average temp of 40 degrees.

Here is the data from my 3 ton unit from last year. As you can see, in my situation, the KWh usage tracks the HDD fairly consistently. |

It is early enough in the heating season that systems with aux strips shouldn't be using them yet.
If yours is now, get help |

From what I see of the graph this appears to be a 43 day peroid. If you have data for the whole heating season I would be very interested in seeing the graph or perferrably the raw data and the installation location so I could do an analysis.

retiredeng: I tried to send a reply with my raw data in excel format as an attachment, but this system does not allow that. I could not PM you the info either. Not sure how to get you the raw data, but I am interested to hear about your analysis. |

OP Klaus gives his location as Janesville, CA. It isn't too far from and at about the same elevation as Reno, NV, which has a design day temp of 11. That suggests that with temps in 30s load might be half of design. That might translate into 6 hours of daily operation. A 5 ton system producing 50k Btuh at a COP of 3.0 operating for 6 hours would use 29.3 kwh. Throw in some cycling losses and some errors in the above assumptions and 30-40 kwh per day isn't out of the question.

Thank you, your assumptions are pretty close, but I'm using up to 20-30% more. The elevation of my house is also a little higher (~300 ft) than Reno.

We might be at the limits of internet support without some hard data - run times and airside / waterside flows and delta-Ts, unit amps, etc. |

The system is not independantly metered. The power consumption during Nov/Dec 08 was approx. 60-70 KWh daily. Klaus |
