Is a flow switch recommended on a open loop system (pump and dump)? I'm looking to replace my failed existing zone valve (which stops water flowing through the unit). The existing valves (1 for each stage of compressor) were TACO EBV valves with integral end switches. This provided some level of protection to prevent compressor operation if the valve got stuck and couldn't open. The replacement valves I'm looking at don't have this feature. I was wondering if the experts here, see this (end switch) as a requirement or just a nice feature... at which point you are depending on the safeties in the unit (low pressure and high pressure). Also, I'm wondering of a flow switch wouldn't be a better solution compared to a valve end switch (as it would prevent the unit from running without water flow, even if the valve proved it had driven all the way open - ie. failed well pump, accidentally closed isolation valve, etc.). Again, is a flow switch something beneficial or just overkill? If beneficial can someone recommend a particular flow switch brand or model? Thanks!

It is fairly routine to wire Y to a solenoid valve and to the unit so that they are energized simultaneously. High and low pressure protection on the unit will keep the compressor out of trouble.
Ideal? Not really, but been done for years. The Tacos are awfully expensive and the failure rate high. One feature they have that is not shared by the solenoids from the orange or blue store is slow open/close action which prevents hammer on your water line. You may need to arrest the shock of a sudden close if you are switching to this kind of valve.

Thanks for the feedback Joe. Things are a little slow on this forum... maybe most people are just busy trying to stay warm !

I think I'll be using a Belimo zone valve which is motor operated "slow close", not solenoid. So I think I'm okay on the water hammer issue. It is rated for up to 75 psi shutoff, normally closed, and spring return, so it should shut if there is a loss of power to the unit. Best part is I got them for way cheaper than the TACO valve.

Yes the Belimo valve does get good reviews. This forum has been slow for some time.
