Local vs more sustainable materials

I have been thinking about building a home in Puerto Rico, Vieques to be exact and nearly everything needs to be imported. Obviously things like solar panels and other technological materials make sense to ship over. But what about bamboo flooring for example? At that point, are you doing more harm than good?
