Hello Everyone,

This is my first post and I wondered if you could help.  I've just moved into a new apartment and it smells really strange - a bit like rotting cucumbers.  Have left the windows open but it still smells odd.

Have been lying on the floor sniffing the lino, smelling the corners of the room, checking the leather armchair and sticking my head out of the window to see if it's coming from outside.  I'm worn out but it's been good exercise!

I asked the site manager (it's a new development) and he mentioned it might be the silica material used to fill in gaps between appliances and the walls.  Any idea what silica smells like?

In the meantime, will use the usual : baking soda, citrus peel, coffee ground, a cut raw onion, essential oils and so on.

Would be nice to hear if anyone has had a similar thing with a new place.

All the best,

NickyB

Open the kitchen cabinets and take a sniff.  In some cases, stained cabinets will stink for months.
