Just received my quote for spray foam insulation. The quote was for $6695.00 which includes the roof decking and all the exterior walls. My builder thinking it would be more like 9,000.00 - 10,000.00 for the job!

I think I'm getting a great deal.

You know, that is a good question. I hadn't even thought of asking that.

My house is 2,100 sq. feet.

Tsufan,

In my area, 2x4 wall cavities are over filled with open cell and then the excess is trimmed off so the drywall will lay flat.  However, closed cell is usually sprayed only 2.5" thick between the studs.  No trimming is necessary.

I believe the insulation will be applies using the open cell method. My builder has told me about the installer having to clean up all the insulation that will be cut off after application.

Is the open cell application the better option?

I talked to the Icynene engineer at the Builder's Convention in LV a week ago and he told me that they use open cell because it is flexible and will not crack if there is any movement, expansion, shrinking, etc. so it maintains its seal to keep outside air outside. Yes, the R value is lower but his contention was that the air infiltration was more critical on the walls than the R value. If you need more R value, go to 2 x 6 walls and fill them 5" deep.

tsufan are you in ontario ? if you are you want closed cell foam for the r value, open cell will not cut it in our winter climate Open cell is also cheaper then closed which is why your quote is coming in 30% less then what your builder had expected

Tsufan,

If you are within a two-hour drive of Auburn, then here is another company that might give you a bid.  This company does open and closed cell polyurethane.
