I'm interested in MgO board. I see it can be used instead of OSB or plywood or drywall. I'm curious to know what it's like in terms of cutting, impact resistance, how well does it hold a nail, does it crumble, etc.
I'd love to get a scrap to play with. Anyone in the NYC or Hudson valley working with the stuff?

Im also interesting in MGO board and it applications..From what ive read and seen on youtube about the "board" is that its pretty nasty stuff to make hence the reason its being made by cheap chinese labor and the fact that there seems to be large deposits of magnesium available to china. SO how is this green and how do we KNOW its safe just because china says "it is". Also, its seems that the only sizes available are 4x8's non-beveled edge sheets. You also have to use self-countersinking screws which are more expensive then regular coarse thread drywall screws. Also cutting seems to be done by skil saws/routers and seems to be a nice as cutting hardiboard which does wonders for the lungs. So tell me what is GREEN about this product? the fact its made from magnesium??? Becuase there is nothing GREEN about the process of making this stuff. |

From what I've heard, since it's paperless, it does not give mold a place to grow. Also does not burn. From the demo videos I've seen it can be scored and snapped or cut with any saw that cuts wood. Also, they don't tape the joints, just use normal joint compound. Ever hear of a respirator? My father died from asbestos, so I don't do anything that makes dust without one. If I have to worry about the cost of screws I shouldn't be thinking of building a house.
The fact that it's made in China bothers me. I'd rather find another source, but it does not seem like there are any. |

I'm building my house with Magboard SIPs and it's pretty impressive. Yes wear a mask but you can cut with anything.
If you screw too close to an edge it will crumble, about 2" in you'll break your screw before it will pull through. Coated screws are because the mgo will break it down (I'm pretty sure, maybe someone else can help there).
As far as strength goes it's funny. Laid flat it breaks easily, kick it and it will break your toe, I've hammered on a 2x6 on the top of a panel with a 12 lb sledge with no damage, I'll say I'm impressed.

Go to youtube.com and type in "Magwall fire demo" it will give you an idea of the performance of MgO Sips |

I posted them in another thread. That fire demo is impressive and one of the reasons I decided to go with them. Once the roof is on I'm going to spray all my joists and trusses as well as any exposed wood structure with a fire resistant paint.

If you are still looking for MgO board ... Jonathon Hampton with the Ceramic Cement Research Institute 479-899-7053 had some 4x8x7/16 for about $25 per sheet. I am looking for someone with experience in using MgO board as forms and then pouring cellular concrete. Should make quite the inexpensive wall. Thanks

That would be me.
We can provide cellular OPC from 20PCF to full density or we can provide cellular ceramic cement (and equipment) from 5 PCF (pounds per cubic foot) to full density (120 pcf.
At 50 pcf we can still mantain 3500psi
I will be out of the country for a few weeks but can be accessed by email at [email protected] |
