We are planning on building in eastern Wyoming. Lots of rolling hills and LOTS of wind. We aren't planning on going completely off grid but want to be prepared to be off grid when the weather sucks in the winter. So, the idea of an earth sheltered home struck us as a feasible idea given that there are plenty of Hills. We thought it would help with temperature regulation and give the structure protection from the unceasing wind. However, I'm not overly familiar with building in that area and while I know about drawbacks to doing these types of homes in the humid southeast I don't know how it changes when you get out towards Wyoming. Thoughts are greatly appreciated.

You can insulate, seal and add PV to a non-earth sheltered house to the point where it will use less energy than an earth sheltered one. And when you consider all the costs, it will also be cheaper to build.
