We are working on our new home, just waterproofing and insulating the foundation today and it looks like another hot one. So given that we have so many sunny days in Calgary I started thinking maybe I should add the solar water heating to our build.
I'm using SIPs, sprayfoam, triple pane/low-e/dual argon windows, and in-floor heat. The house is 2600 sq ft plus 1400 in a finished basement. I was thinking solar could help out with the in-floor heat but I don't even know where to start. I have an 18'x24' section of roof that faces directly South with nothing blocking it.
Anyone have any good reads I could start on, I don't really understand the posts on the site cause I need to get the basics first.
Thanks,
Sean |

Buy a copy of Tom Lane's "Solar Hot Water Systems". Read it, and then try to extrapolate from a one-tank system to a 3 or 4 tank system. (He has a chapter on larger systems, which helps, but you'll need to do some thinking.)
If you cannot get through the entire book, then you should find some professional help. IMO.
Jeff
PS. If you are done framing, then you are pretty far along to be considering a system that might have 300 square feet of solar panels. Snap to it!

Thanks Jeff,
I'm just gonna start framing when I get back from work around the 10th so I figured I'd better get going while I have time.
