We have a project. A pond, 300-400 feet from possible AC power. We are considering an off grid DC setup to run the pumps only when the sun is out. At other times power is not needed. 300-600 watts and could double as a sun shade. Is this plausible? How many gallons per minute do you need to move how many feet high?

I have panels directly driving a shurflo pump. Works well although pump lifetime can be an issue. On the other hand, 400' isn't very far.

What are the pumps for? To fill the pond from a well? To supply water to the house?

Two pumps, one for fountain, one for filter waterfall. I am thinking two of the Jebao DC-12000 3168GPH Max Head 15.8 ft DC24V Watts 85W

My guess is that it is a brushless DC centrifugal pump and would work with 100+W panels that don't exceed 24V. Or you can use a DC-DC converter to provide exactly 24V (full output) under a wide range of conditions (> 32V panels would be a good choice). The link above appears to be a poor fit for what you need.

Can you dumb it down a bit, solar is not my thing? What would I need, and where to get it?

A panel like this (285 watts, 44V).

Waterproof DC/DC buck Converter Regulator 36V(29-48V) Step down to 24V 15A 360W (search on ebay)
