Does anyone have recommendations for paint sprayers - specific types or brands? What should I look for if I buy one? I would like to be able to paint the house, but I would also like to be able to use auto paint for metal and nitro cellulose lacquer for guitars. Am I going to need spearate rigs or is there one for all? Thanks for any help or input you can provide.

House - I bought an airlessco 450 from HD tool rental. Had been used maybe 5 times. New hose and your out the door for $500. An apprentice in a bunny suit can prime an entire living room in 30min including setup. Outdoors you need to be on a scaffold or on grade to keep up with the machine.

Cabinets- we use an astro HVLP gun with a portable compressor (air nailer size). Its a copy of a SATA and has very good build quality. Get a good air dryer/filter kit and you can spray high quality finishes on about 6sqft surface without bleeding the tank down. For more throughput you need a much larger compressor to keep up with the gun. Or you could try one of the airless solutions from Graco or Devilbis. Bought it online from spray gun world or something to that affect for less than $100

The airlessco is supposed to be pretty good at shooting conversion varnishes, urethanes, pre cats (mostly lacquer), even the high build primers and sealers, etc... It's rated for continuous duty at about 10 gal/hour. That it is a lot of tabletops. I have never tried it since the machine is typically shooting oil or latex paint.

Hello,

For any large paint job, an airless paint sprayer can be vital. They are much more effective for large jobs than a paintbrush, and are also better than a roller. Some people are afraid of using these sprayers because o the perceived risk in using them, but as long as you take enough suitable precautions, the airless paint sprayer is a great way of getting your paint project completed on time. So long as you can manage to get the paint job done quickly, there should be no problem. There are many advantages to using the airless paint sprayer over other methods.

cheers!!

word of warning... (for whatever it's worth)

We did white painted trim in our house. It came pre-primed & they sprayed on 5-6 coats of white after it was nailed up. The same painters did the whole house so none of us really know WHY this happened, but when they did the white, the overspray went EVERYWHERE!! The hardwood guy had everything except the final hard coat done when they painted the trim. There was so much overspray that the entire floor had to be re-buffed & a couple new coats of clear. If you're spraying, make sure everything is covered well....

that's what I thought too, at the time.  I figured that they wouldn't waste their time doing more than they needed to do.  It DOES look good...  ;)
