You can have everything else working for you, but if there is a light-colored sidewalk or patch directly in front of your windows, you can still get smoked at times.

That very-local reflectivity won't do much for smokin' you if it's the north side of the house though (which is what I thought Lbear's scene was represented.)

I'm gonna put a section of dead black rocks outside my South windows. That oughta kill the reflection.

In that case, what does your south side yard look like? 

Concrete paving/sidewalks can be quite reflective, as can alkaline hardpan soils common in AZ ( caliche, etc. )

The bare soil appears to moderately reflective- enough to add something to the mid-day gain. Iif that's facing south I assume the photo was taken at ~8AM(?), give or take, based on the shadows?

Actually this is NORTH facing, the south facing was the other photo.
