Depending on your budget and energy efficiency requirements, you should choose double glazing at a minimum, although ideally triple. Triple glazing particularly shines in large glass surfaces where the glass area is so great. As for patio door options, there other options such as bifold / folding doors and Tilt and Slide doors. Tilt and Slide doors solve the wear and tear issue as the sash lifts up out, moving parallel to the fixed portion. It does not drag along the bottom. When using the tilt functionality, you also don't really need window screens. If you still don't like sliders in any form, check bifold/folding doors. They can be custom made in multiple sections of your choosing (3, 4, 5 panels and more) and fold away flat when opened. Here in Germany, they are all made to order and folding doors are particularly popular for being able to completely open door space, i.e. not only half the total space like sliding doors which have a fixed portion. |

I just found these: https://www.euro-wall.com/commercial-door-products/#ound The web site says they can make 5 foot wide panels and have 1 3/16" glazing in a 2 1/4" panel. So a bi-fold as your architect drew it is, maybe, available BUILT IN THE USA. |

EDIT I talked to them and unfortunately they only offer solid 2 1/4" wood or hollow aluminum NO INSULATION other than the glass which can be r5 but the wood is r3 at best. UGH.
For my basement I want a wide doorway, but it needs no windows, I'll probably end up building my own 3"thick door panels with 2 1/2" polyiso insulation and using Eclipse hardware to make a 3 x 30" panel out-swing bi-fold, about an r 10 door. |

You can directly contact the professionals who install the windows and doors. They can help you in selecting the doors, according to your budget. |

This is a pretty old thread that seems to have been revived. We ended up using Triple pane Provia French doors If I remember correctly they have a U value of about .17 |
