Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum, and am getting ready to build a new house as soon as next month. My father and I have been looking at research on ICF, and want to learn about any of the tax benefits from building green this year. Does anyone have any information on this? We want to be as green as possible, but also must stay within our budget (we have a great carpenter that we should be able to build for around 100 a sq ft.) We will be building a 28x52 wall foundation, with 10 ft walls (basement) in the NC Mountains (Plumtree, NC 28664) Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

Hello CSCMTP,

Contact Alice Dodson out of Asheville - she's very well versed in Green building.  I'm only aware of her Durisol projects, but she does everything so you'll have options.  She will also be aware of any tax benefits in your area for sure.

Good luck!

I built a similar sized home using ICF foundation 3 years ago in upstate NY. It was about 1/3 more costly than a conventional poured concrete foundation. The savings for me was in heating costs. The basement is a constant 50 degrees most of the year even  with 25 below zero temp outside. If I were to do it over again and I could afford it I would have used the ICF all the way up for the second floor.

Best of luck with your project.

cscmtp,

Best of luck with your build and welcome to the forum. I would sinerely double check that $100 sqft budget, as it seems a bit aggressive to me.

If you want your project to incorporate geothermal/ICF/wind/solar and hit that number, it won't happen and you will be hard pressed to hit your budgeted number with just one of those technologies.

To answer your question, if you are after tax benefits for building green, many of them can be found at the following link...

http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=products.pr_tax_credits

Also, you may want to look into state and local tax insentives that could be available to you. We have some in certain localities here in Virginia.

If you want to build with ICF, I know of a few contractors in Virginia with their own bracing that MAY be willing to travel to assist with your build. That being said, to build with ICF for $100 sqft or less would be extrodinary.

Best of luck.

There is an ICF contractor that is a colleague of mine in Blowing Rock (about 30miles from you) that is in the process of building. Let me know if you would like to visit/contact.
