I'm having an argument with a builder. Do you need to fur out the interior of the ICF wall before you can sheetrock it? From what I read, it seems like the answer should be no. He says it will be too wavy to put sheetrock right on it.

No, you don't. At least, we didn't on our house and it turned out just fine.

he could very well be correct...........if he installed it like complete crap. That should be your first issue! It should not be wavy at all. Sheetrock goes directly to the ICF on my projects and most I can think of. I have seen people fur them out to get plumbing chases or something similar.

Why would you bother furring out then applying sheetrock and finishing when PlasterMax could be applied directly to the ICF and provide a smooth, fire resistant, mold resistant, abuse coating?  Happy to send you quote, application info etc but what a labor intense project when you could use apply mesh and PlasterMax and have a better finished product!  See more about PlasterMax at www.TheGreenBuildingProductsStore.com

No.

I've had this discussion with a few builders in the past.  I suggest you put $100 on the table or whatever's necessary -- it's easy money and in the end you don't actually have to take it from him.

Perhaps the easiest way to convince him is promise accuracy will exceed that of interior wood walls.  Take a six foot level or longer and hold it horizontally across 2x4 or 2x6 walls and you'll see that it's quite easy to beat the plus/minus present there.   This is because wood varies and twists a tiny bit and even when you have a very good slab you are still introducing minor variations from the slab to the flatness of your wall before you stand it up.   If your slab is near perfect you'll find greater variance on the other side of the wall.

I have seen walls furred out for various reasons but sheetrock is not one of them.   Regards.

I've seen some pretty sloppy ICF installations, but yours doesn't need to be one of 'em. (I could shoot the idiot who did the ICF foundation on my foundation- flatness wasn't terrible, but the tie-in with the original was unnecessarily leaky, and issues like "plumb & square" seemed to be beyond his comprehension. That said, it still turned out to be a decent room, for a basement. :-) )

TexasICF has it right, it almost all cases it'll be flatter than typical studwall construction (or even "better than typical" studwalls) but like anything, all relies upon the skills & diligence of the practitioner.
