Im throwing around ideas to build a shop. I use to install ICF forms so I have basic knowledge of how they work. I Have received quotes for conventional, sip and I have a rough cost per square foot for ICF building also, so I have a good idea on costs. So sitting here reading thru different topics and information I thought to myself why not use ICF forms in post and beam/ pole barn type build. Instead of using concrete use either a silica sand mixed with resin to harden it or even just regular whatever sand. In my mind the ICFs would basically replace the use of 2x4s in a pole barn construction. the sizing would be 24'x32' at 8' high with a A frame type ceiling. The posts would run thru the footings to the top of the ICFs where a top plate could be mounted to them, for attaching the roof system. Idk just throwing around some thoughts. I scrolled back 6 or 7 pages and didn't find anything on the topic. anyone heard of or tried something like this? I think sand is like $10 or less a yard and last I checked where I am located concrete is around $100 a yard. I work in the Cast aluminum mold industry now so I now you can make sand to be as hard as concrete using a resin, which is not very expensive.

I like your idea. What kind of resin & where do you get it?
There are several concrete substitutes, "Grancrete", Ferrockā„¢, soil cement or rammed earth.

Well you could probably buy sheet EPS cheaper than the ICF blocks. Since the ICF won't be structural without concrete in this case, Build the pole structure, sheath with EPS and fill with your bonded sand...
