Hey guys, on my sips house I am more than likely doing 100% brick and was wondering if housewrap or felt paper would be best over panels.  I've seen both of them recommended by two different manufacturers.

Thanks,
Adam

I would probably go with paper. Where did you get you SIPs if I may? One or two Story home? I am curious.

hey Charles, I actually am just in the planning stages for my home but i'm hoping to use sips. And i'm planning on starting in May so I'm just trying to learn as much as I can before than. It will be a one story home and I'm looking at FischerSips and Encercept panels. Thanks for the help!

RE: Wrap...anyone used Gorilla wrap?

I understand it to be stronger and does not vent formaldehydes

Their site is Http://www.gorillawrap.com

The neatest thing that I have seen in house wraps is a spray on wrap.  Wind won't blow it off and it had a good perm rating.  I saw it in Florida but I can not remember the name or company.  Can anyone come up with name, company or source?

Hello Adam.

Have you looked at Polyurethane SIPs?

We've installed many thousands of square feet of both EPS & Poly panels and the Poly beats the EPS in every catagory.

Hey Lockard

I've seen a little bit about Poly Sips but really haven't researched much, where can I get some info? I think I've read some of your past posts, did you say use a company in Missouri? If so where are they located? I'm in southern Illinois. Thanks, Adam

Hello Adam.

We built custom stick homes starting in the late 60's. We built them as good and tight as possible with pretty much every insulation method mentioned here. In that period we didn't even have house wrap so we used felt paper to help reduce any air leaks. A vapor barrier was sheet plastic. Ahhh.... the bad old days.

We started using EPS SIPs in 1981. Poly SIPs were available but we couldn't bring ourselves to use them because of the CFC blowing agent being used at that time. Since CFC's have been taken out, we use Poly SIPs exclusively.

Starting in 1997, Thermocore of Indiana supplied the Poly SIPs for us until about 2002 when a plant was built here in Missouri. Thermocore of Missouri is our main supplier unless one of our jobs is closer to the Indiana plant. The two plants are pretty much clones of each other. And I hear that there might be a plant being built in Colorado in the near future.

Go to:http://www.thermocoremo.com/

Give them a call, ask for Mikey.

Good Luck,
Lockard

I built a Pu Foam SIP In Missouri and went 100% brick on the out side and went with the felt tar paper because that is what was easy and the brick layer was used to using and I have never had an issue with it. I think that both would work fine I would go with ever fit the best budget (Cheapest) Also I used Panels from A company in Iowa Called Iowa Cooler Co. Andy

Adam,

I'm pretty sure that it was a recent issue of Fine HomeBuilding that had an article comparing house wraps.  It was discussing conventional framing rather than SIPs, but the basic trends ought to carry over.
