Without debating the application value of vibrators, the consensus appears to indicate "most" vibrators are used probably incorrectly.
Are there any new models on the market which may be less powerful than the standard ones and are specifically marketed toward ICF's? Most vibrators need to be in the concrete medium to cool themselves, are there any external ones available, excluding Sawzalls and manual operated hammers?

Jim,
We use a Makita cordless vibrator. It's not real strong but I can guarantee it will consolidate the concrete and find any weak spots! |

Just a note: I have found that with systems which do not have exposed ties, the sawsall and manual hammer methods dont work. Although I dont agree with the method, consolodation by utilizing a sawsall run up the EXPOSED web members (not a recessed or foam covered tie) sufficiently consolodate the concrete. It appears to be due to the direct action gained by the impact on the tie itself, weareas the foam covered ties tend to dampen the effect. We use the Oztecs and recomend them greatly. A 1.2 moter, with 12' whip and 3/4" head, seems to be the best, however, I have noticed that it depends more on the installer.

many of my builders use a $19.95 air chisel, like the ones mechanics use to cut rusted bolts. they bury the chisel in a 12" piece of 4X4 lumber or weld on a 4"x4" piece of flat steel and then vibrate the wall with short burst of air, applied to the furring strips or the area where the connectors are buried. also works well on hitting the rebar to clean it off between lifts.

As I am usually the pump monkey, getting thrown all over the place I have been very cautious about internal vibrating, mainly because I don't have eyes in the back of my head.
Thanks for all the tips, my first experiment will be with the air chisel!!
