Thanks Masoud! I had mentioned this tax credit to a representative from H&R Block who is coming into our workplace to do Tax Tip seminars. She knew right away about it and referenced the Economic Stimulous package. I knew it was out there somewhere!

Interesting this draft is very recent. I couldn't find it on the IRS website last monday, nor could I find a 2008 draft copy on my company's internal site (I work for a company that makes tax software for accountants). You might want to be advised that with late changes like this, just as happened last year to people because of late AMT changes, your return might not be processed until February. If I recall though, the AMT extension happened in Dec. last year, so they should have more time to have the 5695 working this for Jan 1st of 2009.

What is "Manufacturer's Certification Statement3"?

Is this something that Climatemaster would have to provide? or is it on their site....?

Someone had mentioned that TurboTax/Intuit had not yet confirmed that the credit would be available.
Turbo Tax (Intuit) posted expected dates for the form to be in their system.

Form 5695, Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit
Date for Print01/22/200901/22/200901/21/2009
Date for Efile01/22/200901/22/200901/21/2009

The link for all forms / dates of availability are at: http://turbotax.intuit.com/support/kb/update/form-availability/1108.html

I believe the source of the confusion is the Residential energy credit

And the geothermal tax credit are 2 separate things , the statement that the first is not retroactive is accurate and does include energy star upgrades , but if you continue on Geothermal is mentions specifically and is fairly clear ( as much as lawyer speak can be )

I will assume that if it will be on Turbo Tax, it will be on other software platforms like H&R Block?

I assume as much. You might want to check our the H&R Block Taxcut web site ( They probably have a question/answer section like intuit). Look for anything on the 2008 version of the form I mentioned above....

I worked for H&R block doing returns for a season and was thoroughly unimpressed with both their software and preparers' knowledge - they are all about selling a high fee refund anticipation loan and not much else. I advise staying well clear of them if your return is much more complicated than 1040 EZ or simple schedule A.

Turbotax is better, but sometimes have to wait into February for updated downloads on new tax issues, and often have to search hard online for answers for obscure tax issues (such as geo credits)
