thank you for your response,ok,i have to appologize,i made a mistake,i went over the oil cost's/consumption..i used about 525 gallons from oct to march at $3.23 per gl.that comes out to around$1600..i was on a budget plan, and i was looking at the balance sheet showing a balance of $505 next to gallons delivered..i'm very sorry.. this is on top of going through 1 1/2 ton of pellets...thats from oct into april,roughly..i've used 1 ton of pellets so far this year, that was started in oct again, that was only source of heat oct to nov..the contractor we had, dissconected our oil furnace those 2 months, geo started up day before thanksgiving..so,i belive i'm still on target there? what i'm not thrilled with is,1-electric consumption as i posted on top, seems to have jumped over 800 kw per month...i'm not sure if thats a normal increase?but from what i'm hearing here,i guess it is??? And 2, it just feels cold in the house...i've checked air temps, with thermostat set at 68,its coming in at around 66...and the air handler just seems to run constant...if i set the temp higher to make up,i'm thinking the system will run all the time... i also feel that with the oil furnace running in prior years, the basement had heat, which would then radiate upstairs, through the floors..this is what we had oringinaly wanted to have, but our contractor said it would be better to go forced air... as it goes now,i'm thinking of going in a passive solar direction?thanks again, and once again to everyone, sorry for getting my numbers off...very long day...

800 kw at .066 is less than $55 a month X 5months is $264 plus $350 for pellets so far. Turn off the pellet stove and turn up the thermostat to 70 or 72, stay warm and you'll still save over $1200 a year! |

I think there are a lot of people who are disappointed with the Kwh usage but I think that utilities have raised the rates, the winter has been much colder than average and our geothermal heating takes some getting use to, we no longer have "hot" air coming from the registers and seems that even though the temps are 20 degrees above the return air temps it feels cool and chills the people in the rooms. This link has several interesting Kwhr usage comparisons http://www.greenbuildingtalk.com/Forums/tabid/53/forumid/13/postid/52522/view/topic/Default.aspx however the Heating Degree Days unless mentioned don't give a very good comparison to relative energy spent. Additionally I think that without better insulation and better control of air leaks we can't really expect much more but I feel that I have spent much less than I ever would of using propane.

i had a solar hot water panel installed, the lines run under the roof, they were not sealed, then they run back outside on the rear of my house and down into the cellar, the lines out side weren't insulated,a rain downspout was put on to cover them, but just 1 section, theres about 8 feet top and bottom left exposed,a 4in. hole was drilled for the lines to enter the cellar, was not filled or insulated... other things, the old oil furnace was to be removed,it wasn't,insulation in the crawlspace never done... honestly this wasn't the system we asked about,we oringinaly called about the solar hot water and what our alternatives were for heat?we were looking at a radiant floor set up,but were told that wouldn't work for us,that geo was the way to go,and we could use our well we allready have???but we would get both estimates..then one day i come home and theres a well truck digging a well in my front yard...so,here we are... i really do belive the geo is a great system,i guess i just have higher expectations?and i'm looking at the increase of electric consumption..plus i have concerns that the performance is not where it should be?but i'm seeing here on this forum that it's seems to be running the way it should...thanks..

Kwh usage has nothing what so ever to do with rates. True higher rates equal higher bills, but higher rates don't equal higher Kwh usage. I think Solar gain has a lot to do with heating your house, as well as your activity level. When I have my thermostat set at 68 during the day, it feels warm, but at night I feel cold, even when kicking the temperture up to 70. It could just be a matter of it feels hot in the areas near the pellet stove, so other areas of the house, feels cold, even thou they really aren't but when you leave the 80+ degree temperatures near the stove everywhere else seems cold. The human body is a funny thing, at the end of summer when it drops from the 80's into the 60's it feels very cold. After week of sub-teen weather in the winter, 40 degrees seems like a heat wave. |

For those who think the contractors here are too concerned with data or "we back up our buddies".... we ask questions because sometimes people goof. Hoover, sounds like you will save a grand on heating this year (coldest this century), not bad. J |
