Hi Carol in Ventura,

We're a design firm using an ICF system on a project that was recently burned in the Santa Barbara fires.  We liked your comments  but wanted to know if you could expand on the fire issues.  As you might expect fire is on everyones mind around here.

I'm afraid I don't know much more than what I previously posted about the fire-resistant Firestone rubber roof we had installed. You can see the installation on a web page I made at http://iweb.tntech.edu/cventura/RubberRoof.htm , though.

why not design an all concrete roof?
fire, water, sound, hurricane and tornado proof, no maintenance...
check the bermuda roof post....

On a roof like this; why couldn't EPDM rubber roofing be put over the concrete and then another 2-4" of concrete be placed over the top. The additional concrete would create a walkable surface that would protect the EPDM from ultra violet light?

We started the design process of a nearly flat roof like I described but the project got scraped before it was finalized. But we do the same thing on garages and stoops over living spaces.

Fire resistant EPDM is fire resistant only to the extent that it doesn't help spread the flame, just like fire resistant EPS. Firestone EPDM has been treated to make it resistant to ultraviolet light. It has a long life expectancy fully exposed to sunlight.
But it's not uncommon to have EPDM covered with thick concrete overlay. It is often a lightweight perlite or cellular concrete placed on top.

Pick any two.

I have done this just not on for a roof. I use a regular mix design with fibers. On all my other flatwork I use rewire or rebar, but with the EPDM I don't want to risk a puncture.
