The various radiant and hydronic systems I've seen all have the supply and return manifolds mounted horizontally with the branch circuits branching downward.  Is there any reason that manifolds can't be mounted vertically with the branch circuits branching to the right or left?

I should mention that I'm specifically asking about simple manifolds with, perhaps only a ball valve and maybe a zone valve, per branch.  Obviously components, like flow meters, requiring a specific orientation may affect manifold placement.
