(I'm not sure why the formatting didn't work on that post?? I know there were some carriage returns in there!)

I've concluded the editing software for this board is a virtual vacuum cleaner designed by Shop Vac! In other words it sucks big time!

Concrete isn't a great heat conductor - so I'd use other materials for solar collectors. But the idea of saving space and combining uses (deck area and solar collector) makes sense.

I wouldn't say a "world away" but certainly more effiicient. Most still want fossil fuel backup with integrated controls for vacation mode peace of mind.

If you install a black pool deck as a solar collector, your tank will be full of 120 degree water, and your pool deck will feel like a hot, asphalt road. Not so good.

I think Legionnaires is a bunch of BS. I have been running an open loop system for years along with many others I know of. No problems here. I think its just scare tactics. I also use a high efficiency water heater to do all my domestic and heat with no problems. I have a 1600 sqft. cape in cold new england and it is awesome.
I designed and installed my system and other than time it was straight forward.

Hey Loop
Can you tell us more about your open loop design?  I tend to agree with you.  When have you heard of anyone getting Legionaires from open loop?  If you could describe your layout and design it would help me choose the materials etc.

Here is some data for you Loop and you Barron.
It is from a small group of scientists at the tardy offices of the Mayo Clinic.

I suggest you read the side bar highlights, notice that the disease is water born and is caught through aspiration (breathing).
Lets see, I do not drink my hot water from the tap....
Humm... where would I be breathing that warm water, Ah yes the shower.

We’ve been assembling a library of scientific papers on this topic and an inventory of statements from various authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).

We’ve also adopted the Precautionary Principle for this subject matter and would suggest it as a sound approach until further research is completed. Be sure to download the “Precautionary Principle by the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST)”, published by UNESCO.
