Has anyone in Maine, Vermont, NH or Canada use a geothermal heating system for a year or more?  Is it effective? efficient?  Does it make sense cost wise?  What problems or successes have you had?

I will be building a retirement home this fall and want it to be fuel efficient and green if it can be done in a cost effective way.  I am in Maine and I have heard that heat pumps are not a good idea here.  Anyone agree or disagree?
