I think I (or rather a nosy neighbor's near threats to get the DNR involved) have given Joe enough things to do right now, so I thought I'd ask around here. How hard is it to change a house that's already got the ductwork to be zoned? Does it actually require multiple geo units? I'm not looking at this for now, but at some point my wife and I might be changing where our bedroom is at in our house and it would be really nice to turn down the master's temperature to something lower than the rest. Right now we control that through the current room we're using being on a side of the house without duct work.

I recommend you contact this firm: http://www.retrozone.com/ .

They are experts in zoning, new install and retro.

Best regards,

Bill

Huh, is that all zoning is - a control system that blocks the vent with choke points?

Yes that is basic zoning. Some zoning systems are simple others can be quite complex.

It will be important to coordinate a zone system with the heat pump. A six ton system (even in 1st stage needs a lot of air flow).

Well, I'll schedule something with you for roughly the 2014 time frame Joe. Let me know if you have any dates and times available.

While on the topic of six tons and zoning I finally got out to my builder buddy's problem house with my nifty new Testo manometer - needed data to support my opinion that a couple zones are way way under sized / ducted.

TESP is 1.3" with just the first floor zone active and 1.65" with just the 3rd floor zone active. This came as no surprise since unit was upped from 4 to 6 tons without significant changes to ductwork. Blower is rated 0.75", so I wonder how long it'll endure.

Without data, you only have an opinion.

Last comment may have come off wrong. I meant that I probably want the youngest child to be 6 by the time I look at the idea of zoning, when I'd want to zone a first floor master.
I never asked the question on her to skirt Joe's involvement, I'm honestly assuming if/when I do this, if Joe's available, I'll be contacting him for it. I just thought I'd ask on here just about the possibilities as I think Joe's got a Long John Silver's deep friar worth of fish to fry right now.
