Hello,
We are building our dream home in New Jersey:
- 11,000 sq.ft. - first and second floors - total area to be heated / cooled - 23,000 sq.ft. (includes basement, garage) - radiant heat - Geothermal heat pumps - Lite Deck (1st floor) - ICF foundation and basement walls (10 inch) - 2 inch insulation on basement slab - SIP Panels (1st floor, 2nd floor, and roof panels) - 10 inch - double pane windows and glass doors - R-6 insulation on ducts (no forced hot air)
I used the software on www.hvaccomputer.com ; and it gave me a tonnage of 19.5.
I am looking for contractors to install the Geothermal system + HVAC + radiant floor--and of course the drillers. Also looking for engineers who can properly DESIGN the geothermal system. Please contact me on this post or email: [email protected] if you are doing business in the NJ area, I can email you the plans. |

Thank you. Would you know the typical drilling cost in our area? Or maybe lead me in the right direction? |

What is your area anyway? I'm guessing North West New Jersey. I can't imagine a house at 11,000 sq feet, that's twice the total sq footage of my house and half my sq footage is unfinished. ie Garage, basement, Attic. |

Currently, we're drilling for an EarthLinked DX system on a house with 18,000 sq. ft. of living space. Then they have radiant garages in addition. Not sure how much sq. ft. is in the garages. (just another summer home, too)
They're also supplementing the pool house, some with the geo. In total, they're doing 60 tons of geo. House is located at about 9,000 ft. elevation. Even in this winter, and drilling in Basalt cobbles, boulders, and rock, we average 3 grouted holes/day. (figuring in 3 hours of daylight travel time for the employees, too).
Anyway, I passed your info on to Mel Hensch, the EarthLinked sales rep in your area. I'm sure he has a capable dealer near you. He knows drillers, too. |

Thank you for the help. Out of curiosity, how tightly insulated is that 18,000 sq.ft. project. 60 tons of geo? Seems like a lot, doesn't it...how many total square footage are they heating/cooling? |

Thanks. I checked out the Web Logger you have on your site. How many loops / tons / heat pumps can that handle? In short, how many would I need if I had a 20 ton load? What is the advantage of having that gadget? |

This house is Icynene foame walls and ceiling. The radiant floors are throughout. The basement slabs and foundations have a 2" foam board insulation. Window U-values are .31 or lower.
I'm not sure how much square footage total. They are going to maintain the snow-melt slabs at 40 deg. F., regardless if it's snowing or not. (that's a real energy saver...NOT) As far as just the 18,000 sq. ft. living space, its load is about 38 tons heating, down to an outside temp of about -4 or so before any supplemental needs to be used. However, with them implementing some of the snow melt, garage, and pool house, the 60 tons still isn't enough. |

That snow melt is not efficient. We were thinking of doing it in our project--but we decided not to. It takes the efficiency out of the system. Anyone have good references for geo well drillers in the area? |

Tuffluck... What's with the DX system? Never researched them? Who manufactures the equipment? You're referring to drilling and grouting copper ref. lines correct? How does the COP of this system compare to std. closed loop systems with PE pipe / antifreeze solution? |

EarthLinked Technologies, LLC manufactures the best DX system. Nordic also has one available.
COPs of the EarthLinked DX system will beat closed loop water based loop systems. Also requires much smaller drilling equipment, especially if you're drilling just rock, which should cost less on the drilling side. |
