I am new to this board and have a question about using my swimming pool as a heat sink during the summer months in Central Texas. The pool is 15K gallons. I have been reading that it takes about 1.5 gpm per ton of AC load. A 4 ton unit would then take 6 gpm. That flow rate would take more than 24 hours to turn the pool volume over 1 time. Is it feasible to install a water to refrigerant condenser on a heat pump to use the pool as a heat sink? The pool is an in ground type. I am sure this is not a novel idea and someone has already looked into this case.

You can and it’s not too difficult, I would just think you would easily overheat your pool in summer down there. Even leaving the pool uncovered and maybe even a fountain on, you would still likely have a HUGE hot tub after a month or so.

BUT putting in a normal field and a parallel line in to the pool circulation system you can dump heat in the pool to get it up to the temp you want and then let the field pick up the rest of the heat dump.

Any chance anyone has a piping schematic using a heat exchanger with the pool water and valves to switch back to the field when the pool is at set point?

Just some basic info that would point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Ed

I am in the process of switching mine over right now to do this.  The plumbing will be setup like this.

The trick is more in the control rather than plumbing.
