Question here.  I have a customer who would like a Waterfurnace split system.  The Envision split has high enough efficiencies to qualify as Energy Star.  My customer would like to use his propane system for his air handling and as a backup in case of a power outage.  If combined with the propane unit will the geothermal system still be eligible for the 30% tax credit?  When combined with the Envision air handler it is.  I have not found any answers at the Energy Star site and my TM was unsure.  Any answers or input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Denny

Eer why? Unless the customer has a generator to run the fans on the unit, having propane as a backup is pointless.

If model has the appropriate EER and COP listed then it is qualified. The back up heat doesn't matter as long as blower generates proper air flow.
All DX systems are split and many qualify for Energy star. Their forced air numbers are good enough that we can get the tax credit even if we use it in a hydronic configuration where the COP and EER wouldn't qualify.

Tech,
The customer is fully aware that the propane back up unit is less efficient than the complete geothermal system. They live in an area that has experienced power losses frequently and he has always used his generator to back up his system during these times. I also feel like a full geo system is the best way to go but the customer has weighed the different options and would like the security of being able to start up the propane in the case of a power outage.

Joe,
Thanks for the info, as we do on all jobs we have measured the ductwork, and have completed a load calc. We are also installing a new ECM fan for the air handler. His ductwork is fine as far as air flow goes and the house has not had any issues as far as uneven temps. I really appreciate the help.
