I would guess that occasionally, in the hotter areas, an existing home owner that has their AC fail might not choose geothermal because they want the quickest fix possible.    

If this is true, then it would seem that some type of temporary AC service would help with that concern.  A side effect would be to provide a very good idea of load needed (one would presume better than Manual J).  Is temporary AC done, is it needed?

yes, using window units.

Really not useful for load calc, IMO, since they don't cool entire structure evenly

free standing, ducted units are available and geo can aways be "temped" in as open loop.
