Anyone here from Long Island that installed a geothermal system?  I have to replace an entire heating system and want to install geothermal.

As well as this forum, a good site to check for certified installers is the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association Site (google igshpa).
Good Luck,

I'm from LI. I am getting proposals from several firms right now and can tell you that there are a lot of people out there who are willing to put in a system, but know little about them. Be careful. I've spoken to 12 installers so far and checked references - some of which do not check out. Some just jumped into the business, some have been in it a while but have outdated views or tell me things this forum and the geoexchange forum taught me simply are not true. Some want the homeowner to get their own well diggers. One gave me a manual J from someone else's house, but tried to tell me it was done for mine, even though the square footage didn't match my house's. It's been interesting. Also, you might check LIPA's list of recommended installers.

Re sq feet I would caution you that some folks don't know how many sq feet they have. One homeowner I met was off about 1000 SF in her estimate. Hacks took her word for it while I was disqualifed for poor measuring skills. Notsaying this is you, but I would ask for explanation before discountng the opinion. J

I should have checked back here. Sorry. While I understand that some homeowners do not know their square footage, I do, so it was easy to tell the manual J was off. Way off. The installer I hired did scrupulous measurements to get the correct cubic volume, not just the square footage as did most of the others. A few didn't measure at all, and oddly several of those who didn't had been highly recommended by the local utility as doing the most installs - our utility gives a rebate on each install. I shouldn't have suggested going that route. I am pleased with the WaterFurnace system I bought and would highly recommend the installer I found to anyone on Long Island. He has years of geothermal experience and is completely trustworthy. If any Long Islander reading this is looking into geothermal and would like his name, just send me a PM.
