On new construction, the fireplace dealer quoted dual-wall stainless chimney at an outrageous price. The fireplace is setting on concrete supported down to the footings and will have a real stone exterior all the way up. Can I just have the stone mason install a clay tile chimney instead of the stainless? I think it would be cheaper.

Thanks,
Greg

I thought the metal pre-fab fireplaces were the cheapest way to go?

Tile and firebrick is a lot cheaper and will last a lot longer than even SS if properly maintained.  But it'll clock in at 15 to 40 times the labor cost depending on the complexity and a good chimmney mason isn't cheap. Also requires good quoordination with your GC, as your mason could slow your close in or vice-versa.
