With any "flat" roof, your membrane should have a minimum of 1% (1/8" / ft) slope to avoid ponding.
You should have overflow drains or scuppers to avoid structural overload if you main drains are plugged.
Regardless of what people say or advertise, I belive a root barrier is absolutely necessary.
Make sure you deal with a reputable company who has been in business for a minimum of 10 years. Make sure the manufacturers rep inspects the surface before installation.
Make sure all the flashing details are thought through ahead of time.
The above is good practice with any roof.
Are you interested in an "extensive" (sedums, drought tolerant plants, etc) or an "intensive" (like a lawn) type of roof?
This will determine the: load; need for water retention material; irrigation; etc.
