With any "flat" roof, your membrane should have a minimum of 1% (1/8" / ft) slope to avoid ponding.

You should have overflow drains or scuppers to avoid structural overload if you main drains are plugged.

Regardless of what people say or advertise, I belive a root barrier is absolutely necessary.

Make sure you deal with a reputable company who has been in business for a minimum of 10 years.

Make sure the manufacturers rep inspects the surface before installation.

Make sure all the flashing details are thought through ahead of time.

The above is good practice with any roof.

Are you interested in an "extensive" (sedums, drought tolerant plants, etc) or an "intensive" (like a lawn) type of roof?

This will determine the: load; need for water retention material; irrigation; etc.

These sites have downloads at the end you will find interesting.

I will leave it to the 'experts' on the internet for provide your specific answers to a green roof but having dealt with the commercial aspects of green roofing check with your insurance provider if they will cover your house if a green roof is built on it.
Here in Vancouver a lot of the condos are built with green roofs as well as the 2010 Olympics athletes village and the new convention centre. Some of these projects had to change insurance providers because of the potential leakage issues with green roofs.

The local technical institute, BCIT, is on the forefront of this technology. It may be worthwhile checking them out.
