Pre heat water

After researching solar water heaters I have come to the conclusion that by installing a conventional electric water heater and pre heat the water using a black metal box the conventional water heater thermostat should not kick or little.
Anyone seen this system?
Also using black pipe curled but a black tank should suffice

Never seen it, but I'm not clear on the exact set-up you're talking about.
