do a load estimate to calculate the avg amt of watts you're looking to generate, analyze your budget for your future system and check to see if you have a good solar window in the area you wish to install the system.

Off grid or on?

You're looking at solar panels, charge controller, inverters, batteries, cables, etc

Take a look at LINK - the website has all the information you are looking for. You can read about the different Solar PV system designs and you will even be able to completely design your own solar electric system.
