I have a aprox. 500 sq. ft. storage house behind my parents house that we're looking to turn into a apartment for my daughter and I. Right now it's literally one, big, open, square. I'm looking to put in one or two bedroom walls and doors, small kitchen area, bathroom, flooring, lighting, etc. Where should I even begin? What should I do first? We don't have plumbing out there and that's a major thing obviously. Can someone give me some direction? Thank you!

You will need a building permit. Depending on where you live that might be extremely easy or extremely hard, but the first thing would be having someone knowledgeable to come and inspect the structure of the building, as the renovation you are speaking of will be in no way cheap, and it would be a terrible waste to put all that money in a problematic structure. You need to be checking for any signs of mold, rot, leaks, ect, as well as how stable the foundation is. Do not skip this step because a lot of storage buildings aren't built to last.

There are five steps to build a new home.

1. Plan your budget
- Do you have enough money to put up a new home? Do you have budget for materials? Summarize all the expenses that you think you'll be spending. Knowing the approximate cost will help you budget your money.

2. Choose your lot
- As what you've said above, you already have a lot that you will be using for the construction of the apartment. That's a good start!

3. Line-up your team
- You need to have a contractor. He will be the one to to select a team for your home building.

4. Plan
- The decision is always in your hands. If you want their suggestion regarding the outcome of the looks, it all depends on you if you'll agree with them. Plan wisely.

5. Negotiate a contract
- Be sure to always have a written contract with the contractor. Be detailed!

I hope my ideas help you!
