Getting ready to start construction of a new 3000 sf home just west of Philadelphia in the spring and just finalizing construction loan. I had heard about these mortgages years ago but not so much in recent years. Home will be extremely energy efficient using Superior Wall Xi systemfor foundation, Emercor insulated rim joist, Nascor III EPS wall panels, Jeld-wen windows and radiant heat. I just recently came across a mortgage company in Michigan that exclusively promotes these mortgages. Anyone else ever use this type of mortgage and who did you deal with? Thanks, John

Chase bank at one time had Energy mortgages, but most people in their mortgage department were not aware of it.
So far I have not come across any great advantages to warrant refering, to one of the energy mortgage specialists.
Usually there have been other upsides to going the conventional way.

I will say that I do enjoy working with IndyMac who specializes in "systems" built financing

National City and Suntrust have the energy mortgages. There are other loan and grant programs around. I'm at a different computer so I don't have the link but the NREL has a list of various state and power company loans and rebates. For instance in VA Suntrust has a loan program at 2-5 percent lower than normal for Geothermal furnaces.

Thanks very much for the Energy Mortgages information ! We manufacture a system to build true Zero Energy Lifestyle homes. That is a near 0 energy home with solar pv panels and an electric automobile plugged into the home to recharge. Consider how much $ you'd save with virtually no electric utility bill and not buying gasoline for 75% to 90% of your driving. www.eyedestu.com FYI & questions: zeroenergy@cox.net  Salute.

And, just who manufactures an all electric automobile?

If you're not building with OSB SIPS(or ICF's), why are you building?

There are Independant companies who are converting existing Prius electric cars to be Plug-in hybrids. ZAP motors has a dealer here in Mesa, Az where they sell the ZENN which is a neighborhood electric car, and there are other small comuter vehicles available now. A123 systems sells the Lithium batteries,  ACPropulsion sells the controllers and drive motors, there are other companies, like Hymotion, who are scheduled to come on line with kits in 2008 to convert existing and new hybrids, like the Ford Escape and others. There is a two year waiting list for the all American Tesla all electric roadsters, and even a $600,000 Venturi Fetish all electric sports car that has sold out production schedules.

There is a significant undercurrent of enthusiasts who are deeply committed to ending, at least for ourselves, this foreign dependance on oil. By our success and bragging rights we will be inspirational to others who will also throw off the yoke...of gasoline. The membership of the Electric Automobile Association is growing. You might seek a local chapter and attend a meeting. I'm sure you'll meet people who through a little of their own ingenuity already have electric cars they are driving  right now.

Their heros are the racers who are whoopin' the doors off their gasoholic competition. They say it costs about $10,000 per run for a high speed racer to play on that field. Special exotic fuels, engines that can only run a few times before being rebuilt, torque and horsepower being augmnented by huge blowers but countered by high reciprocal mass. There's electric recers who drive their "race cars" to the track, have a standing thousand dollar challenge, play whoup up for about $0.17 worth of electricity per run, can run several times per charge, achieve record setting runs, and drive home. I have a fiberglass sports car I'm converting. You should google electric cars and read the results, or go to Youtube and watch those killer Corvettes and Vipers being killed. You can be in denial or you can be in the game. I'd rather have the solar system and electric car than those utility and gasoline bills. Europeans are paying $8.00 a gallon. We don't because part of our taxes go to subsidies that make more profits than gasoline sales for the oil companies. There is a movement in Congress to end that ridiculous benefit, which I'm hoping will gain momentum once Bush and more of his Big Oil cronies are booted out in November and 2010. Many people don't believe we should ethically and morally be going to foreign countries and ochestrating murder on a grand scale to get their oil. I don't support that, so I'm switching off oil gasoline as much as possible. I also support environmental harmony because it is critical to the survival of life on this planet and becasue I can keep more of the green money I make from savings by being smart and simply not being wasteful.
