First, thanks for keeping this forum full of opinions about product and construction with sips. I have found many of the threads here interesting. It is why I am writing this first post.
I am planning to build in marco island florida in late 2009 early 2010. I have amassed a mess of info and my key goals are to construct a eco friendly house (not to the point of straw bales and chemical toilets) which will be able to sustain wind and water associated with general florida weather as well as our occasional big brother, hurricanes. Being in a flood zone has left me to believe if I am building sip then the only real choices would be fiber cement or steel.
I am asking for advice here based on experience in humid climates with high solar heat gain. My structure will be approximately 3000 sqft on two levels and like most fla homes has a lot of glass. Questions I have are:
1. basic SIP selections
2. windows providing reduction in heat gain
3. roof structures as I believe my roof too complex for sips (and how to get appropriate R value in the roof)
4. I was planning metal roofing either standing seam or some new metal barrel tile.
5. ERV necessity
Budget is about 100-125 / sqft.

| There is no roof too complicated for SIPs, and galvalume steel is your best option for the salt air |

Kevin,
My suggestion is for you to visit a few work sites in progress. After I visited several and spent long hours talking with guys like Chris Kavala, I went with steel sips and am glad i did. If you are ever in the orlando area I would be glad to show you my place as well as a two duplex and we will be putting up a 100 X 100 Chapel bld. soon. Going with 6 inch galvalum sips will be the best thing there for Marco Island. You could even go up three stories have the first floor be the break away surg floor being your garage etc.

Thanks. Would love to visit some sites in progress and complete. Currently I reside in Tampa so Orlando is a bit over an hour. I understand from Chris Kavalas tagline that he is in Florida as well. I do not have the construction know how but can be an extra pair of hands for you when you do your chapel.
I have read a bunch here on the forum as well as through mftrs sites and all but still have questions I believe can be answered by seeing what was done already. I am in the energy biz (mostly cogeneration and solar/wind merchant plants) and am real intent on building as efficient as practical.
I will reach out to Chris as well.

If you are in Tampa then you have one of the most knowledgeable and helpful guys at your door step. Chris is out of Holiday and as his last post states has many projects going all over your area. Please do yourself the favor and check out some of his sites. |
