Hi folks, I built a 28 x 28 SIPs house on a ridge which gets some pretty powerful Santa Ana winds from time to time The house is entirely SIPs. The energy efficiency is really something, and I'm basically quite happy with the home, but the vent pipes in the roof move in the wind against the foam and the squeaking is driving me nuts. Actually, the noise in a windstorm in general is bad through the whole house, but the vent pipes are my special bane. Last night I slept downstairs because it is slightly quieter than the second story. I haven't yet covered the walls in drywall, or the ceiling, and I was wondering if , when I do get around to that, is there anything I could do to mitigate the sound in general. And, does anyone have suggestions for quieting the squeaky vent pipes in particular? Thanks for all suggestions, Kavade

Ah. Well, probably. That might do it. Thank you for the suggestion.

Kavade;

From the roof you can insert a small spray foam nozzle at the stack boot ...spray enough foam to fill void between pipe and foam. or if it is still accessable from the bottom you can do it that way

We have never heard wind - even in hurricane force winds, its like watching a silent movie out the back patio door.
Your wind noise may be from your windows or the fact that the house is not finished yet may be the reason

Kavade,

If you can still get to the vent pipes where they go through the roof, then see if you can anchor them so that they will not move as much.  Usually PVC pipe is stiff enough that it will not move much if properly anchored right before it goes through the roof deck.  However, if you can not get into the attic to anchor the pipes, then see if you can caulk around the pipes from the top side.  Whether you can do this would depend upon what type of roof you have and the type of boot installed around the pipes.
