Framer just called and he will be in on Thursday to set the deck. We will start backfilling on Friday and work through the weekend and hope for the best, whether the carpernter is done or not. Our excavator told us we need to backfill or next week will be too late as the ground is starting to freeze.

Thanks for the help.

Well, the framer called this morning, and can't get out there today, so he won't have the deck on done by tomorrow as he had previously estimated. And next week he is schedule to do another project and can't come back to work on our house until after thanksgiving.

We can't wait any longer to get that backfill in there as the first couple of inches have begun to freeze at night, though it still thaws out during the day. We are going to go ahead an backfill without the deck. We already have the equipment rented for this weekend, so we will just have to be cautious. The walls have been curing for five weeks now, and there is a ton of rebar in there as well. We will do the work in lifts, and hope for the best.
Thank you for all of your suggestions and answers.

I guess the next question is, once it is backfilled on the outside, do I need to somehow protect the footings from the inside now that the deck will not be on there until the first week in december?
Once the deck is on and while the framers are working on the main floor, do I heat the basement somehow? What would be the best way to go about that?

Thanks.

Protecting the footing on the inside would be nice, we did on the last winter job. Here most general contractors put heat in the basement after the deck is on. But basements are usually pretty dry, in which case it probably isn't necessary.

Success. Thank you for all the info. We had to backfill before the deck was in, and we did it very carefully. No signs of stress on the walls, and they are still as plumb as ever! We even beat the snow!
