Our Home
Title: Our Home

Location: Boone, IA
Start Date: 3rd Qtr 2008
|
Building Type: Single-family Home
Project Type: New Home/Building
|
Green Products/Techniques Considering: Insulating Concrete Forms, Radiant Heating, Doors/Windows, Energy Efficient Lighting/Appliances, Recycled Materials
Details: We are finally going to build our new home. It is a Ranch with a walk-out basement. We started out seeking to do a full ICF construction, then sought to do an ICF basement with SIPs for the main floor. After finally getting all of the necessary quotes to compare our options, we chose to go with a walkout ICF basement and to frame the Main Floor. We plan on using insulating foam on top of the sheathing to minimize the thermal bridging of the studs, and we will be using spray foam insulation in the interior to maximize our R-value.

It's Official We break ground on Monday, if the weather cooperates! This is it! I'll post some pictures with the progress we've made so far. I just pray that everything goes a smoothly as it possibly can. (Reply)
| Re: Our Home Hi Boontucky-girl: If you've not ordered your SIP's yet, you might take a gander at a competitive system that offers lower price and more insulation and let's you DIY. Lucy

| Re: Our Home Thanks for the link Carl. It's too late for us to look into this for this house, but I plan on building a small cabin in the back of my acreage for a visitor's cottage, so I will definitely bookmark this for future reference.
| Groundbreaking If all goes well, we will be having a groundbreaking ceremony the last week in August!
It's a bit tricky to try and arrange all of the trades together. The hard part is that in order to get the SIP's order finalized, we need the truss shop drawings; but the truss supplier won't sign off on the shop drawings until the sill plate has been squared on the foundation (just to make sure we don't have costly mistakes!)
So, we'll erect the foundation, square the sill plate on there so we can get our trusses and SIPS designed. In the meantime, we will do the plumbing under the slab and install the radiant floor heating and get that done. Then we'll set the floor deck, and wait for our SIP's to arrive!
Can't wait. (Reply)
| Bidding Stage We are collecting bids for building our home. We're acting as our own GC, and we'll be tackling as much of the build as we can, since budget is tight and the dream is bigger!
We are considering SIPs and ICF because we can tackle some of the work ourselves and save labor, not to mention the benefit of superinsulation! We're going with 6" SIP upstairs and ICF in the basement. (Reply)
| Re: Bidding Stage Have you checked out thermobuilt.com for much lower prices? Lucy
