Green Products/Techniques Considering: Radiant Heating, Solar Power, Doors/Windows, Energy Efficient Lighting/Appliances, Wind Generation, Heat collecting roofing
Details: Located at 275' above sea level with easterly views over the sea (2 miles)and east and south views of a mountain range (close by) Summer temps average about 65f and peak at 75f. Summer is for about three months with up to 22 hrs a day sunlight. Winter temps average about 32f lowest being about -20f. In the depth of winter there are only a couple of hrs daylight a day. Winds top out in excess of 100mph.
We intend to make this house more thermally efficient by putting radiant heat absorbing roofing in place and painting the external walls a much darker color. I intend to install a wind generator and totally replace all insulation. Going to change to an on demand water heater and install all and any energy efficient electrical systems available.
Also going to take advantage of the natural rise of heated air around the house (which is captured in the observatory)by installing a low speed fan and ducting system to return the warm air to the floor level downstairs.
Many challenges but with the right guidance I believe we can gain a 33% increase in efficiency.
