I Have ICF/SIP Walls, Why Do I Need Spray Foam?

Ø   Fire Safety

California’s new ‘Wildland/Urban Interface’ regulations, designed to reduce house fires in wooded rural areas, no longer allow soffit or eave vents in high fire danger zones.  They now require that vents only be placed on the roof and they must be certified burning ember resistant.  These new vents only allow one third of the airflow of previous attic vents, so three times as many are required, becoming an expensive eye-sore on your roof.

Switching to spray foam insulation allows the use of an unvented attic assembly, eliminating any possibility of fire or burning embers entering your attic. The attic space becomes a part of the sealed envelope and stops heat and cold from entering the attic, keeping your home more comfortable all year long.  It also stops the introduction of moisture, dust, pollen, insects and vermin into the attic.  The air duct distribution system in an unvented attic remains near the inside temperature of the home, making blasts of hot or cold air from heating/cooling system a thing of the past.  Keeping the air distribution system near the home’s interior temperature also reduces the load on the heating and cooling system by 20 to 40%, significantly lowering energy costs and increasing indoor comfort.

Ø   Energy Savings

U.S. Department of Energy studies show that 40 to 50% of all heating & cooling energy costs are lost through unwanted air infiltration.  Infiltration is caused by small gaps in the building envelope that are almost impossible to seal using traditional building methods.  Spray foam insulation is applied as a liquid that quickly expands 120:1 in the first few seconds combined with extensive air-sealing where the foam is not applied, completely seals all sources of air infiltration, including every hole, crack and cavity, providing a complete air seal.  The result is a home that will use 50 to 60% less energy for heating and cooling and keep you a lot more comfortable year round.

Ø   Your Family’s Health

Spray Foam Insulation is Non-Ozone Depleting, Non-Toxic, Non-Off Gassing and Non-Allergenic.  It contains no formaldehyde, VOC’s or other toxic chemicals. Most importantly, it is NOT a ‘known carcinogen’ unlike fiberglass insulation, which has carried a cancer warning label on every package since 1995.

Ø   Spray Foam Insulation: A ‘Green’ Product

Spray Foam Insulation reduces heating and cooling energy usage and costs by 50 to 60% for the life of your home, compared to traditionally used insulation products.

Demilec USA’s products are made with annually renewable vegetable oils, grown in the USA and contains post consumer recycled plastics.

Contains no ozone depleting chemicals or formaldehyde and is non off-gassing, with no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Heating and cooling equipment size is reduced by 25 to 40%.

Spray Foam completely seals against unwanted air infiltration, which is responsible for 40 to 50% of a home’s heating and cooling energy loss.

Is manufactured on-site, reducing transportation energy usage.

Does not support mold and mildew growth and provides a quieter, healthier and more comfortable indoor living environment.

Spray foam qualifies for a significant amount of LEED Building Credits.

Ø   A Custom Fit Every Time

Unlike traditional insulation products, spray foam insulation is custom manufactured at each job site.  It always fits your unique building structure exactly.  If you have curved walls or narrow cavities foam fits perfectly, because it is spray applied and expands to fit each area.  It adheres to the other building materials so it never shrinks or settles.  It is guaranteed not to shrink, crack or separate for life.  You get the insulating value and energy efficiency you paid for - not just today, but for the life of your home.

Ø   Foam It and Forget It

Spray foam insulation will provide you with the quietest, healthiest and most comfortable house available.  You will not suffer from hot and cold spots due to unwanted air leakage and drafts.  Spray foam insulation differentiates from all other insulation products by providing the very best ‘real world’ performance and energy reductions available today.

Once you understand the considerable benefits of spray foam insulation, you will understand why it’s the Intelligent Choice for your home.
