Well I've just recently had my Triangle Tube Solo 60 (LP) and Smart 30 Indirect installed and fired up. The first couple of weeks everything was smooth and fine. A couple of weeks ago I jumped out of my bed at 2 AM to a loud noise that I can best describe as a mix of a whistle, humming, pulsating noise, shop vac almost like a train whistle or warning siren. It sounds bad inside, but even worse out the concentric vent! Almost deafening! The unit isn't shutting down or giving an kind of error messages. I thought maybe the condensate drain pump might not be functioning properly causing a drainage issue, but I'm not sure. I took the the door off the unit and you can hear the whistle coming out of the down facing PVC pipe located in the middle of the unit. I choose this unit over a similar sized Munchkin because it was supposed to be the best and most trouble free in this size. However this is making me a little nervous.

That's a new one. Does the sound vary as the boiler modulates up and down or is it constant? That PVC pipe is that combustion air inlet for the burner so it seems like its gotta be the fan making that noise.

In any case, it isn't normal. you say you just had the boiler installed? Call the installing contractor and tell them to come and fix it. If the fan was bad out of the box, surely they'll replace it for free. One of the beautiful things about this boiler is that swapping parts (like the fan) should be a piece of cake.

You know you're slipping over the edge when you start replying to your own postings.....

but I was just talking about this with one of our Techs and he said he once saw a prestige that had sucked the sticker into the air intake inside the boiler (one of the stickers from the inside of the cabinet). It was basically stuck inside that PVC tube on the way into the fan and he said it was whistling like a bastard.

maybe that is your problem? sure would be an easy fix.

Best of luck,
