I was told that the ECR systems have some problems; which I believe have to do with their compressors. Is this true? And if so was this an old problem that has been corrected?

There are 2 manufacturers that you may be referring to. One is in NY, and calls itself ECR Industries. The other is in FL, and has changed names to avoid confusion. They are now EarthLinked Technologies, instead of ECR Technologies.

If you are referring to the ECR Industries, I can't tell you yes or no to your question. If, however, you are referring to EarthLinked Technologies, they don't have problems with their compressors. If they did, it must have been an old problem. EarthLinked is now using the Copeland scroll compressor. It's a very reliable, good compressor.

What kind of installation are you looking at? Forced air? Radiant/hydronic?

EarthLinked is a company that has a great track record. They have a product that has been extensively tested and proven in many different climates. They have been installed in 41 states, and 14 countries. They offer wonderful support. They've stood the cost of fixing problems created from dealers not installing them correctly. We've experienced great success and results from the EarthLinked product. In many cases, the COPs are higher than expected. (where the ratings show 4.0, we typically see an average of 4.5-4.7)

EarthLinked DX really is a reliable, tested, and proven product.

I would invite you to call them yourself. Ask them about their company. Ask them about the dealers in your area. Call Jerre Wilson at: 863-701-0096 (office) or 863-944-1265 (cell). Or if you want the toll free, call: 866-211-6102. Ask for Jerre, he's executive VP.
