Our HVAC dealer in Kansas has offered in the package a Climatemaster Genesis GSV036 Water Source Heat Pump; 3 Ton (16.3 EER)

We have 2 more options:

      1.  Upgrade to variable speed, single stage, Genesis 19.3 EER for $655.00 more

      2.  Upgrade to Tranquility 27, two stage, variable speed 27 EER for $2230.00 more

I will minimally upgrade to the variable speed for only $655.00 more, but would upgrading to the two stage be worth it in any way?  Would it decrease monthly operational costs?  Would we "feel" the difference (e.g. better dehumidification)?  What to do, What to do?

My new Tranquility 27 does a much better job removing humidity than my old system due in part to the two stage fan. I would recommend it. I asked about the extra dehumidification option but my installer didn't feel it would be needed. As he explained, the air is moving slower through the unit allowing it to remove more humidity. Old Rh was over 50% in the summer. It's now typically around 40%. With the lower humidity we actually raised the temperature and feel more comfortable.

Why are you considering a Genesis unit. The front end savings may not approach the long term savings you would get from the Tranquility 27. Ask your installer for a payback calculation. I used to heat with propane. My payback period is only about 52 months. You might be surprised to see that the extra you spend now on a Tranquility 27 will result in a bigger savings over the life of the unit when compared to the Genesis.

From most everyone I have heard from they have recommeded the tranquility 27 as well (at least 2 stage vs. single stage), and mostly for the same reasons.  I will have to have the HVAC contractor do some cost analysis.  I mentioned this, but he was in the car, on his cell, and said he would need to do some better calculations.  Thanks for the input and confirmation.

Consider also the quieter operation of the system in low stage. With mine I don't notice any difference in compressor noise between stages but the blower and return air grills are almost inaudible on low.

Operational cost difference will be inconsequential between 1 and 2 stage units. However TTV038 unit includes R-410, variable speed fan standard (more even temp mix and delivery), more heating btu's, better dehumidification, quieter operation and a lower operating cost. I suggest all or nothing..... you need to get into the geo as inexpensively as possible, the Genesis is fine, if you want the best unit of the choices offered you, the Tranquility is.
