Fall has arrived and the heat on my new system is now running.

My question is about the fan stages. In cooling mode the fan seemed to run in stage two most of the time. No scientific analysis. My deduction is based on the perceived air flow out of the registers. Sometimes a lot of air was pushing out of the register (Stage 1, I assume) but as I mentioned most of the time it was a steady light volume of air.

Now that the heat is running it seems that the fan is running in Stage 1 all of the time. Again, I'm using the hand test for my determinations.

Does the heat run in Stage 1 most of the time? I understand that in recover mode the system is probably in Stage 1 but during normal operations shouldn't there be a balance between the two stages? Is there an easy and more precise method of determining which stage the fan is actually running in?

Thanks.

Stage 1 is the lower of the two stages, about 67% of capacity. On these heat pumps heat fan is greater than cool fan which is the opposite of fossil fuel furnaces. Your thermostat determines staging. Some have a small 1 & 2 on the display letting you know what stage you are in. Most tstats work in stage 1 when the set temp is within a degree of actual temp. Greater than 1 degree it kicks into 2nd stage.

2 stage heat pumps will start in first stage and will move to second stage when the thermostat tells it to. Some thermostats go to 2nd stage after a set time has passed. Amount of time is set by user. Other thermostats go to second stage if the room temp is still falling when heat pump is heating or vice versa in cooling.

What brand heat pump and thermostat do you have?

My thermostat is a Honeywell VisionPro. I think the model number is TH8320U. I don't think this thermostat indicates which stage the fan is operating in.
